    Need Gun Safe Recommendatiion

Can someone please recommend a gun safe that is reasonably priced and offers good protection against the ambient humidity?

The safe would be for six long guns and six pistols.

    Thanks for you time.

I got a Fort Knox from Craigslist for a fraction of retail. It's huge and holds 16 rifles and has a shelf for handguns as well, and came with the golden rod dehumidifier. It was cheap because it was hell to move. It cost me 550 bucks and a couple of pizzas and beer for friends to help me move it. If you are on a budget look for a good used one, they are out there.

      Gun Safe

      A couple recommendations:
      1) Get a bigger safe than you think you need, if your collection grows you won't have to buy a new safe, and you can store other items in it.
      2) If the guns are high value weapons, then consider a fireproof safe.
      3) I bought a great safe from Lowe's hardware store, it was cheaper than any gunstore, and fire rated for 1 hour.
      4) While not perfectly "humidity proof" I add small bags of dry desicant occasionally to help with that.

A good used safe will save a bunch of money, as suggested, they are out there. I would recommend against the desicant bags, they absorb moisture and must be dried out occasionaly in an oven. Get a small heat stick from a safe store, they work great and need no maintenance. Also, there are people that move safes for a living, special equipment makes it much easier.

                All good suggestions.
Most assuredly, buy more safe than you think you need. It will be it's own reward in time.

                  safe recommendation

Hi Edward An absolute "yes" on getting more safe than you need. Also a hint on moving one is to remove the door which usually accounts for about half the weight of the safe. Once the door is open I used a roll-a-round type car jack to lift the door off the hinges. A friend and I were able to move the door into the safe room and then the body of the safe. This was on an 800 lb. Pro Steel safe and the move was no problem. Hope this helps. Tomt

put your safe in an airconditioned, heated part of the house.

i have always kept my safe in the house in the ac and heat. this prevents temperature changes of thirty degrees or more. if you put it in an non conditioned space like a garage, you can see cold nights and hot days and the items in the safe can fall to 40 or fifty degrees and in the peak of the day warm up into the 80s. a temperature change of 30 degrees is going to cause condensation.when that happens the metal sweats and moisture condenses on it and it rusts. my brother found this out the hard way with a big metal unconditioned trailer. when we opened it all the stuff was ruined by rust. like it had rained in there. if kept inside the house temps are usually 65 to 80 degrees and change slowly. thats good. ac also is a great duhumidifier and aprilair also makes a superior dehumidifier for a whole room of guns.

I also have liberty safes. I am happy with them. Ihave the dehumidifiers in the safes plugged in and in the house.

Just a quick tip for moving your "Iron Maidens" the biggest baddest safe is a breeze to move on a few lengths of metal pipe 3/4" or 1" is ideal, use thick wall pipe like galvanised water pipe ...heavy ones will tend to make light tube oval and then its all over , push the safe along on the pipe rollers and as one comes out the back pop in around the front again and if you have to go through a door with a bit of a lip or step to climb go up a few sizes of pipe and continue rolling.....just played this game with a one ton monster I picked up at scrap value.
                        Regards

I got one from sentry safe. You can look at sentrysafe.com
I got mine at walmart (although they only sell they during hunting season. Lowes also sells the same safe.

Like Pitts, I live in Fla and my gun safe (Cannon) is inside my house in the climate controlled area and I live on a saltwater canal. I have never had a rust problem at all. I do check them frequently and use CLP on all fo them.
