K98 deactivation certificate question

    K98 deactivation certificate question

    Hello gents. I have just bought my first K98 which came with a deactivation certificate. Now the query is that the de-ac code stamped on the rifle is 21859 B, but on the de-ac certificate it says 2185 B with a 9 inserted in pencil after the 5. Is this usual for a certificate to be amended this way?

    The serial number on the de-ac certificate is supposed to match that of the weapon.

    I would assume that the typist missed out the 9 and somebody added it with pencil.

    Not sure about the legal implications of this.

      Why would someone de-activate an antique weapon? Wouldn't that destroy it? (It sure does in my opinion)

        because of one man called Michael Ryan and one called Thomas Watt Hamilton. Too complete scum bags

        To answer the question sorry ive never seen one with added digits.You could try calling the birmingham proof house.But if you wanted a new copy they might want to see the rifle to re-inspect it?.

          I presumed it was a typo error but like you say i'm uncertain as to the legal side of things. If it's such an important doc shouldn't it have been corrected at the time (2003)? Is it worth writing to the proof house in Birmingham to see if they have a record of the deactivation? Maybe they could send out an ammended cetificate. Wouldn't mind paying for it for peace of mind.
          If the extra digit was written in pen and initialled then no probs, but pencil? Just seems a tad strange.

                  Regretably de-activated weapons are the closest most collectors and re-enactors can get to owning the real thing in the United Kingdom.

                  Personally, I appreciate the things for their design and historic context.

                  The chance to fire them would add to the experience but that is no longer an option in the UK.
