Help From The Experts - Luger Holster?

    Good Day Gentleman,
I was wondering if some of the experts here may be able to tell me what this is. My father-in-law recently acquired an s/42 1938 Luger from an estate sale.
Along with the Luger came this holster. I wasn't sure what he had until I turned it over and noticed the waffenampt and what appears to be WAA23 followed by "bml /44". I looked through this forum and others and couldn't find anything similar. Any suggestions as to what this may be are greatly appreciated.

    Many Thanks

The holster is a standard later war P.38 break-away, softshell or 3 piece..to name a few slang terms for them.

It is common to find vet bring back Lugers in P.38 holster and P.38s in Luger holsters....and sometimes other incorrect pistol/holster combinations as well.

The pinned on insignia is another common vet applied characteristic from both WWI and WWII.

Holster's value would be well reduced, but some collectors like these vet enhanced examples in there own right.

      Awesome...
That makes perfect sense. It's too bad that there appears to be several pins missing. Pretty interesting nonetheless.

      Many Thanks

Some of these guys were regular van Goghs of the holster decorating art world. I think that originally your holster may have had 2 hat eagles (3 prongers) along the top of the flap (1 left side and 1 right), it had a cockade in the center of the early (pre 35 or so) wreath. Then I think that it had 3 more pips on it...that would be one more on the flap and one on the closure tab and the last one maybe on the mag pouch...this was the forrunner to modern body piercing!

I've often wondered if there is any correlation to the bits stuck on the holster and the actual soldier that the pistol came from (either KIA or POW), for example could 4 gilt pips and a Heer cap eagle have come from a Heer Hauptman that also had the pistol? I guess the answer is: Sometimes, but how do you ever tell for sure?

The Wreath is from a ww1 Vets cap that they wore during the third reich.

It looks like a standard Reichsheer nickle-silver hat wreath too me. It think that they were in use from about the late 1920s until about 1935 or so. I could be wrong but don't see what I am missing if i am?
