    ZF 41's help needed

    Hi,
    Here are a couple of sight's and a spare mount,
    The top sight is a direct vet accuired one the second a recent antique fair perchase the spare mount iv'e had a number of years,
    The top one is marked;
    fvs +
    ZF 41/1
    the second is marked;
    dow
    +
    ZF 40 41/1
    having a line horizontal through the 40 cancelling it out? WHY

    All mounts are marked k98k-Zf.41 with numerous serial numbers waffen marks and dwv.
    question have repro's been made of these? our any other info you can tell me.

    Scope

    Yes, repro mounts are being made... SARCO has them! The scope started out being the ZF40 and the went to the following designations; ZF40+, ZF41 and finally ZF41/1.
    The earliest production of these scopes was marked Zf40 and were mounted on some G41(m) and G41(w).
    Model designations were either lined through or machined out as they changed.

        I concur with Robert. Have seen both zf40 scopes where they were either lined out or completely milled out, and restamped with a zf41/1. No repro scopes are being made. These scopes are rather complex. I remember cleaning on years ago and if I recall correctly, they had 6 or 7 lens in them. Not sure why they are making fake mounts, as original mounts have always been more common than scopes. Will have to stop by Sarco one day soon and reprot what I find.

          Hi,
          I have been studying about ZF40 series a while and have noticed that on many mounts, there is a marking "5" on the inner side of the rear arm (have no idea its meaning). My ZF41 and ZF41/1 both have it and some pictures on Law's and Senich's book show it too. How about yours?
          Of course, the absence doesn't mean it's a repro, but I don't think Sarco has put it also. So it may be a clue for an original?

          BTW Merdock, you (or the vet) have assembled the top one improperly. I mean the clamp to fix the scope, and the rear rainshield. The second one is correct.
          Regards, Ken

            Hi.
            Thanks for the info,i will change it Ken but that's the way it came except that i probably put the shield on wrong.
            How much will i have to pay for a rifle to put one on.

              Hi Ken,
              Just changed the rain shield around should thesharpe edge be to the rear and the rounded end on the scope,also have looked at the mount that you said is assembled incorrect but i see no difference?

              Both mounts with scopes are marked with a 5 but the loose mount is marked with a ;h;

                The rifle will be the hard part to find. More scopes than rifles out there. A skilled gunsmith can easily add the mount to a nice k98. That fact has always plagued this hobby. I have owned a number of correct zf41 equipped rifles over the years, and still own a few, so I can tell a messed with rifle. But, like most German sniper weapons, it is getting really tough out there for the new guys. The nice rifles are all tucked away in collections, and seldom surface. When they do they bring big $$$s.

                As for the number 5 on the mount, I have often seen this. But, I would not use it as an absolute on determining fake from real. You also enounter numbers such as this on long side rail scope mounts. I am sure that the repros will not be tough to spot, regarding mounts.

                  Hi Merdock,
                  The clamp with a longer leg on the rear should come on front. Note the planed edge to face front.
                  Hope this helps.
                  Ken
