PPK Cal.7,65 mm(32). Cardboard box question !

Gentlemen !

What should I look for to judge if a cardboard box for PPK Cal.7,65 mm(32). is pre-war or war time manufactured ? The box I have been offered is with reddish snake skin imitation on the outside and a paper label who says: Walther logo, PPK Cal.7,65 mm(32). Nr.163894

Hope some one can guide my on this!

I hope to be wrong but I don´t think that there were real differences between a pre-WWII or a wartime period box. I never heard anything about it, and I´ve seen some pistols (both pre-war and wartime guns) in their original boxes - they looked pretty the same. But I must confess that I didn´t check them closely.

Try to check at www.simpsonltd.com. Sometimes he has some PP/PPK for sale in the original boxes. It is a good reference, but not for prices, as far as I heard around here.

Try to find if there is any info about the where the factory was located when the cardbord box was made. "Zella-Mehlis - Thüringen" was the Walther city up to 1945. After the war they moved to Ulm/Donau.

Prewar or wartime PPK with SN 163894 is nonsense. Used SN range was 755 000 - 1010000 and 173 500 K - 431 000 K.

Post War

Thats called an "Alligator" box and it is post war thru the years around 1968 then the PPk was banned for import. Walther switched to a plastic box shortly thereafter.
