    Ithaca 1911A1 from the CBI Theater

    My grandfather brought this Ithaca 1911A1 back from the CBI theater. He was a truck driver in the 1006th Engineer Battalion on the Burma and Ledo Roads. He used to show it to me when I was a kid and tell me the story of bringing it home. I always dreamed of owning it. At age 84, he gave it to me last year. It is the most prized item in my collection. Thought I'd snap a few pics and post it here. It has a few scrapes and scuffs here and there, but is in about 95% as issued condition.

                    Blair,

                    In my opinion this is mint Ithaca. I love the finish they put on these old battle horses. But yours is truly unique because it came directly from the veteran and, by the way, this old soldier is your grandpa. Nothing - I mean NOTHING - can pay such pedigree and joy.

                        Here's how my Gramp pulled this off. He and his buddies were unloading a train and loading up their trucks to bring supplies to some air base. Everything on the manifest was unloaded off the train, yet there remained one small box that didn't appear on the manifest. They pried it open and found a box full of 1911A1's. They each took one and he carried his throughout the war.

                        To get it home the guys all had a system. As they lined up to get their duffle bags checked for contraband before boarding the ship, the guy in front would hand anything he didn't want the inspectors to see to the guy behind him. As the inspector moved to the next row, the contraband was handed forward and each G.I. would then burry whatever they had deep into the duffle bag and off they went to the ship. This would continue for each man, and this is exactly how my gramp got his .45 home.

                        He's going to be 86 in August. He's got some early Alzheimer's and had a pretty bad fall 2 weeks ago that ended up landing him in a nursing home. I'm hoping he'll be able to go back to his home and my grandmother, but he just seems very weak.

                        I was just thinking about him yesterday and pulled out his .45 to be near him a little, and snapped a few photos.

                        I've showed this before, but in case you haven't seen it, here's a pic I took of my gramp, my father, and I at his 85th birthday party last year.

                            Wow I think your grand pa's Ithaca is a 98.5% to 99% condition.
                            It is absolutly a fine piece.
                            You are so lucky to have it passed on to you.
                            I love the picture with the helmets, how cool is that.

                              Wonderful stories, and provenance for your Ithaca.

                              What is really cool, look (as I'm sure you have) at the photo of your Grandfather as a young soldier, and the photo of you in the upper picture at approximately the same age..... Remarkable resemblance.....
