    SmKH Ammo Label

    Hi,

I am trying to deciper the labels on my boxes of SmKH for my web site and I"m stumped on one item.

At the bottom left of the label it reads:

R.: Ro-Bu 22 L 38. At least I think it starts with "R". I'm pretty sure the "22" is the delivery lot number and the "38" is the date of manufacture but I've never run across "R.: Ro-Bu:" before. The lot number "22" and the date "38" is the same as shown for the bullet.

I suspect it has something to do with the special super hard steel core for the bullet.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Regards, Leon

    Hello Leon

It's not an R but a K from Kern (=bullet core). Rö-Bu is the abbreviation for the manufacturer of the (tungsten) core.

      Hi rudolf,

Thanks so much for your response. Do you know the full name of the manufacturer Ro-Bu? I suspected it was the manufacturer but had never seen a name abbreviated like that on any other boxes that I have studied.

      Regards, Leon

Unfortunatly I don't know who Rö-Bu is. Rö could stand for Röchling, but this is only a guess.

        greetings,

            Hi Leon,

I have a near-mint full box of 7.9 SmKH. It has taken years of collecting to obtain it and I was under the impression that only one or two sleeves of this made it into the US? Mine is a 1940 date. I would be interested in learning about the history of your box. Here is a picture of my box. Thanks. -Ger

              Hi Ger,

I actually have 4 boxes, all with different labels. So, assuming the sleeves were original, there had to be 4 of them.

I am working on a presentation that will be on my web site in the "Gallery" section. My web site is lmd-militaria.com. It will be a while yet before I have completed the SmKH presentation.

I bought 7 boxes from a dealer in Oklahoma. 3 were duplicates so I let a friend have them at my cost. I am not sure where the boxes came from since the dealer didn't want to divulge his source. He indicated there might be some more really rare stuff coming available but, so far, when I check with him, he has heard nothing more.

One of my 4 boxes has the same label as your box.

I'll post here when I have completed the research.

Here is a link to another super rare round: http://lmd-militaria.com/page0202.html

              Regards, Leon

                Hi Leon,

I am aware of only four different SmKH box types from different makers in the US. I have a fellow 7.9 collector who has all four. The story goes that when Navy Arms imported the big lot of 7.9 ammo in the early 90s, four sleeves of SmKH from different makers made it into the US. From what I can tell, either all or nearly all existing SmKH boxes are from that lot. This might be an urban myth, but...these boxes are indeed very, very tough to get. I will be interested in seeing your final website. If you want to discuss German 7.9 ammo offline, PM me and I can share photos of my collection with you. Thanks. -Ger

                      Thanks Jason,

That is a tedious job but I enjoy doing it as there is very little detailed information about the German 7.92mm ammo generally. It is very interesting when you learn some about it.

                      Regards, Leon

                        Hello,

Here are the labels on my 300 rounds wood box. I found this one ten years ago. It had remnants of SmE ammo labels above the SmKH ones; explains why they were so well preserved.

                          Hello Leon,

Did you ever try to see what is the lable under the P490 133 L40 ?

                          Cheers

                            Hi Dufleuve,

No, the top label is firmly attached and I don't want to take a chance on damaging it.

                            Regards, Leon
