    MP40--Opinions On Value

    Guys,

    I'm going to part ways with my MP40 in the next few weeks, and I'd like your opinions on it's resale value. It's a Wilson tube gun, transferable on a Form 4, lower receiver 7573p, and misc numbers throughout, the child of many fathers. Condition--using NRA, Fjestad, or Standard Catalog values? I'd say NRA good--very good. It's a good shooter; was a reenactor's weapon. Comes with ten mags and an original loader.

    I'm guessing at $8K, but no less. Opinions welcome, and thank you.

    Sounds about right to me, from what I've seen. If I had 8K I'd buy it myself. Good luck on the sale, I bet it will go quickly!

      From what I have seen on the dealer and auction sites for a Wilson rec gun that sounds about right, maybe even 8500$....Chris

          Now is not the best time to sell. The market is soft on class 3 sub guns. If at all possible, I would hold off.

            I beg to differ!! With the impending doom of the law abiding gun owners rights due to the Socialistic/Communistic thinking of the current administration living inside the White House I would say NOW is never a better time!! Alex

              Lon is correct: the NFA market is "soft" right now. Common stuff like tube guns seem to have been hit the hardest, but nice C&R guns have also dropped back a bit. To me, this is not just a temporary drop due to the economy, but also reflects the very high rate of appreciation these guns have enjoyed the past 5 to 10 years. To me, prices were getting too high for the market to bear and something had to give.

              The MP-40 tube guns were bringing $8,000 to $8,500 a year or two ago, before the economic downturn and the downward movement in NFA prices. Thus, my guess is that you will not have buyers jump on it at these prices; to move it you may have to drop to the $7,500 or $7,000 range.

              The best place to sell it is on the subguns.com "NFA Ads" board and/or the sturmgewehr.com "NFA Market Board". It you want to sell it, post the gun for $8,500 and see what happens; you can make downward adjustments as needed.

                Good advice, Alan.

                Depending on appearance, I think it would sell for $8k nowadays. Especially if it is a remanufactured receiver vs. a newer tube. Wilson guns are usually all referred to as tube guns although many have remanufactured receivers. That will add more and if the reman. receiver still has it's original finish, that will add yet more.

                  Yes, good point to distinguish between "tube" and "reweld" guns. My MP-40 is a 1970's-era reweld (by Chuck Huddak) of an original all matching gun. Mine was cut and repaired under the mage well bands so that you really can't tell anything was ever done to it. Of course, Huddak had to mark it on the underside of the tube, which you can only see when the gun is apart.

                  IMO there is a fairly substantial difference in prices of tube guns vs. rewelds (particularly if, on the reweld, it has original finish and you can't tell it was ever cut).

                  As to the gun in question, I am assuming that it is a tube gun (i.e. pre-1986 aftermarket manufactured receiver) and not a reweld of an original wartime German receiver.

                      I would say $8,000 for a Wilson tube MP-40 w/ 10 extra mags is a bargain. A buddy of mine in Texas just dropped $10,000 on a tube gun, I think it was an Erb tube which is inferior to Wilson. I have seen several tube guns priced in the $10,000 neighborhood lately.
