Ok Gentlemen. I don't know if you remember awhile back I got an otherwise perfect and correct non-import bringback dot 44 k98 that some moron had tacked a fake ZF41 rail onto. Well I removed that. The rifle also had an old coat of varnish or laquer on it - presumably done by the vet. I decided to remove that as well. The stock is a white glue marked with dot and also a standard Heer eagle and H. When I removed the buttplate I found the typical rough splintery wood with brownish debri, sawdust, or whatever caked on it. Underneath the debri on the wood were some pencil markings like you see on some of these old stocks. But what absolutly shocked me is that there are two characters that look exactly like SS runes. I have since cleaned off some of the dirt and oiled the wood, but I photographed the markings before and after. I am attaching links to pictures. What do you guys think? I know the markings are original for sure - that is not in question. What I am really confused about is what they mean. SS seems almost too good to be true....
