I guess I have always been miffed at the Artillery Luger's purpose. I am only guessing here, but would it have been used at distances greater than the short pistol could achieve, IE: Trench Warfare? It seems a bit long to the point of impracticality.

Extremely practical weapon. It was designed to defend crew served weapons from attackers, obviously at a distance. German tactics called for long range defensive suppresive fire. Later (1916) it evolved into an offensive weapon intended for trench raiding and close assault. In 1917 the Trommelmagazin was introduced so that fire power increased dramatically. The LP08 was an awesome weapon in the close offensive role also.

Neat Artillery Luger, look forward to better images. Not only used in WW1, I have an example taken in North Africa in WW2, left behind in a tent along with the owners uniform and other gear. Unfortunately my late veteran friend only took the Luger and a load of Ammo! Being in the UK the gun had to be deactivated and the ammo handed in . regards, Clive.
