this is certainly a foolish question, but why is the trigger in single action mode with the hammer down? does the safety do that? its a long time since i fired/handled a p38...

Man is that a nice svw, or what? I thought mine (1867f) was nice, but now I'm gonna take it out of the case and spit on it!

Mkb42h - when the safety is applied, the hammer drops and the trigger remains in the "single-action" mode. When the safety lever is moved back to the "fire" position, the trigger will release back to the "double-action" mode.
btw, no such thing as a foolish question.
