I can see a mix of MP38 and MP40 ... Tube and Barrel is MP40 rest MP38
with some missing parts .... so its no MP38 ;-))

Yes, it seems to be a mixture : the grip is complete mp38 , the rest ( the upper part ) is mp40 ... a bnz Steyr receiver ... also the bolt is mp40.

Is there any history ? Do you know the pre-owner ?

yes, there is the story:
It was in the hands of a soldier ss (the Gestapo) who worked in the area(oberkrain), the soldier later died or surrender-I do not know! then the rifle was in the hands of partizan and he sell the rifel in parts-idiot! I later bought it and combined it with the mp40 (I havent found parts of mp38)
It is not 100% it is just a story!

yeah, a mp38 grip is of course rare ( only 20000 -30000 were produced ) .
The rest anyway ( receiver , bolt, barrel ) is more "common" with a production number over a million ^^

I can only tell you for german prices : A mp38 ( complete mp38 parts ) in good condition can increase to 2500-3000 euros .

Your Mp38, if it would be in an auction , I would personally give 1600 euros . If you can find some grip panels and the shoulder rest one day , you would have a complete mp38 grip ... and some collectors are really "hot " on this, me too for example

Yes i am looking for grip panels and shoulder rest but it is hard to find it maybe i will get lucky
And if it open something new(better preserved)i will probably sell this mp38!
