At least they will be going to good homes and not cut up.

Someone inherited some unregistered machine guns and decided to dump them. Supposedly a lot of that happened after the amnesty period ended. The ATF has very stiff penalities for holding on to unregistered machine guns. Someone decided the river was the best way to get rid of these.

It's a shame as some of the weapons sounded pretty rare.

I agree, but did you know there are 2 more amnesty provisions if the feds choose to use them. The thing i want to know is how they found the location. i feel there had to be someone tip off the feds . Maybe they lived nearby, and saw suspicious activities in the middle of the night, and thought they were dumping a body. This is the only senario i can muse since they werent silted yet. Many vets familys still have auto weapons in attics, etc, and i know as i know many collectors who have passed on dozens in my time. I know one ex forum member who bought a grease gun fully functional in the 70s, and tryed to sell it to a collector at a gun show ,who actually turned out to be batf agent , and it was confiscated.

            Well

Well they certainly don't seem to have suffered much water damage ..
I'd guess they had not been submerged for a long time ..

This gem of a quote from the article really made me chuckle:

'We want to find out more and get our hands on whatever is out there,' he said. 'We're going to attempt to find a home for these where the public can enjoy them

Is this the new freindly face of the BATFE under President Obama?

That was a great luck! These could have been dumped in a remote location or could have stayed in the water for months or even for years - great there nice things were saved in time!

                  Ok, what have we got:

                  - Japanese Type 100/2 SMG
                  - Japanese Type 99 LMG
                  - either a German MG15 or a Japanese Type 98 copy.
                  - Thompson M1928
                  - A partial Italian MAB38 SMG, missing the receiver tube.
                  - Japanese Type 89 mortar
                  - A Vickers type fixed aircraft machine gun, most likely a Japanese Type 97 in .303
                  - A Japanese Type 99-1 20mm flexible mount automatic cannon.

A strong emphasis on Japanese weapons, and three of those are aircraft armament, possibly the collection of a a pacific Air Force veteran?
