Whe I have the time, I'll research the topic more thoroughly, but in the meantime, glad to know you guys are around!
Glad to have helped and good luck.

      Basile,

I didn't agree with you, I agreed with Mike's comments above. Just because a rifle has a single sig rune on the receiver, doesn't mean it is an SS rifle. There is no evidence to show that these were exclusively issued to the SS. (which Mike stated earlier, and I totally agree with that.)

The single rune rifles do command a premium price compared to an standard "bnz" K98. However, they don't command the prices that an "sszza4" brings, or any of the "death's head" rifles.

I just want to note; I am in no way considering myself an expert on SS rifles. However, I have had a few of them in my collection over the years, and I have seen and handled many others.

      Mike,
Thanks for the info on the larger "bnz" font. I did have one of those Astrawerke rifles in my collection, but I think I sold it a while back?

As for Mitchells' Mausers; I have one true story to tell. I was visiting a dealer friend of mine several years ago. He had just gotten back from a large show (Tulsa, I believe?), and he had several "shooter grade" lugers. I mean these were all MM, and beat up really bad! Various dates from 1920 commercials, to WWI, to WWII. He had about 30-40 of them. While I was there, he received a call from Mitchells' Mausers. They wanted to buy them all!! I wasn't familiar with Mitchells Mausers at the time. Then I started seeing thier adds. Minty, all matching, presentation grade lugers, still in the case with a Knight's Cross!! Yours for only $4,500!!!

Basically what Mitchells does, is just what I said above. They find old, beat up, MM, cheap lugers (and P38s, and K98s too!), and have them restrored, force match the numbers, put them in a nice walnut case, with a fake medal (your choice of Blue Max, or Knights Cross! depending on if you get a WWI or WWII luger!!), then sell them for outrageous amounts of money!
I just checked thier website; the army luger is $4500, and the navy and artillery luger is $6500! The P38s are $3495! and the K98s, are $699 (for the premium grade)

I would advise everyone who doesn't already know this to stay away from these guns!

I don't really care if you agree with me or not, you do not count as an expert in anything. Mr Steves is quite knowledgeable and I would listen to him, you , Mr Moderator, I would turn up the music and ignore. Again, Mr Steves has my respect, I would hardly consider you an expert on anything.

That's not very nice to say......I'm just another guy like Matt, and not someone who knows it all. I try to help out on forums to keep misinformation from spreading, as I think Matt does very well.

In my time here at the forum I have learned valuable info from Mike and Matt.I find Matt to be a wealth of knowledge. He has earned my respect. No one person has all the answers. You provided some pretty good info in this thread.Look at it this way,If I had all the facts straight we probably would not have gone so in depth. It opened up a pretty good dialogue.

I am not thin skinned but the moderator's condescending tone in his reply deserved a rather straight forward answer. Moderators often think and act as though they live on some higher plane than the rest of us. Jason your post was very thoughtful but the Moderator's attempt to appear superior makes coming to / posting on this forum unpalatable. More to the point I do not respect his knowledge base, therefore he has little credibility with me. Mr Steves on the other hand is widely acknowledged , on several different forums, as a extremely intelligent, knowledgeable collector. I have visited here for years but seldom posted. I have seen more than enough erroneous prattle about German service weapons spouted as fact here. I think I shall return to my former practice of just watching , saying nothing and letting the fools drool over fantasy pieces.

                Basile,

Please re-read my earlier post. I never claimed to be "an expert". In fact I said just the opposite. I also never used a "condescending tone" towards you. In fact, I think your comments towards Jason were very condescending. You put words into my mount by saying that I was in agreement with you. That was not the case. I was in agreement with Mike, and merly corrected you on this. If you were offended by this, then I appologize sincerly, but in no way do I deserve the dis-respect that you have dished out since that posting. Not just because it was towards myself, but because it was an attack, and dis-respectful. It will not be tollerated here, and you can consider this your first, and last warning!

Mike and Jason, thank you both for your comments. Very much appreciate. That's what this forum is for. It's for learning and sharing information. No one person has all the answers. If we did, we wouldn't be here.

                Matt

Ah, let's just be friends here, becaus yea, we're all here for the same cause. To inform each pther with the knowledge we've gained and to make some good friends in the process. Once, again, thanks for the posts, and I'm gonna be more wary of the next rune-marked rifles I see...just too many fakes by people trying to make a buck!
