Help needed on dating a K98 stock

Ok guys, discussed in another thread was my LSR sniper rifle, http://70.87.163.50/forums/showthrea...ght=98k+sniper . I needed a different stock for it, a JP Sauer small disc stock. Well, I recently picked up a vet bring-back JP Sauer stock set, but before I get it modified for my rifle, I want to see if what year the stock would fall under, as I want it to be as correct as I can get it. The stock is a red-glue laminate, with the remains of several WaA on it. The serial is 5717e . I don't have the "Backbone of the Wehrmacht" book, so I can't check the serial myself. Thanks for any help guys!

JP Sauer rifles almost always have a date code in the channel- last 2 digits should tell you what it is-- it looks something like this: 2 24 43 or 3 12 44

THe last 2 digits are the year. Most CE44 stocks look the same from 42-44 so it's probably in that range.

Well, my stock has : 2 44 40 in the channel. So the year is 1944?

Based on Steve's contribution above I would believe that your stock is a 1940 and the middle 2 digits are maybe 14 instead of 44.

I think that a 44 era stock would be the most correct for your rifle. I would think that a 1940 stock would most likely have a flat buttplate instead of a stamped cupped one, which type does your stock have? 1940 was a transition year for these buttplates so it may be either type.

Ah, bummer... It has the cupped buttplate, and it is a really nice stock, so I had hoped it would work out. Well thanks for the help guys!

phild is correct- your stock would be 1940 dated. The middle number is the week, so it would be the 44th week of 1940. Thats the current thinking based on years of research on 98k stock markings.

Thats what I have been told 2 -44- 40 is the second day of week 44 of the year 1940. I assume that would be Tuesday.
