    My Great grandfathers Mannlicher 1896/11

    hello friends.
Heres one that you might never see in real life. A very limited production 1896/2 Mannlicher carbine. I dont think any production numbers where ever recorded for this model, but most likely only several hundred where produced. It was my great grandfathers who served in 1871 . He bought it years later new for poaching. It hides nice under the jacket! My grandfather who inherited it, had it in WW2 and had it hidden in the attic to avoid confiscation . After immigrating here in the fifties, he returned to Germany in the sixties, pulled it out of the attic floorboards and took it back home under his overcoat.. lol.. Those where the days. My dad now transfered it to me.

So this will be my sons great, great grandfathers carbine one day.. Lucky kid.

Rare gun! It exhibits some user modifications - the stock replaced with a homemade pistol grip, and the rear sight appears changed to a simple dovetail mount.

Crown over N is a German proof mark used before April 1, 1940. "N" indicates that the gun has been proofed with "nitro" or smokeless powder.

Nice weapon. If the stock was replaced it was done by an expert.

I should be 7.65 mm Mannlicher Carbine caliber, roughly similar to the 1896 (C-96) 7.63 mm Mauser Pistol cartridge.

                  Thanks guys.

It is indeed 7.65.. slightly less powerful than the Mauser round. Several of these carbines where actually made to chamber the more powerful Mauser round, BUt i have not found any recorded info on which serial numbers.. . This model does have a larger, more square safety on the rear of the upper compared to others i have seen, so who knows.

Now the pistol grip has been an issue that has urked me for years.. The woods checkering, staining, lanyard loop is very nice and looks real. But maybe my great grandfather had replaced the original rifle stock for a more concealable model. But , and I say BUT, maybe it was ordered this way.. It really looks factory made. If you had it in your hands, you would see what i mean.

Regarding the rear sight, Since it was a carbine, probaly was modified.(compared to the pistol model having little). Apparently my dad says for poaching . I appreciate your interest. Its a unique piece.

                      file

foto of a standard pistol version. \I would be surprised if even a thousand where ever made of the 1896/11 (pistol+carbine)

                      Notice 3 things
;;;grip angle and rear receiver cut and different safety.
