Ain't no queen, feller! I'll re-tell the story briefly for those interested.
Capt. Litchfield was at his headquarters in the Lakes region of northern Italy at the end of the war. German units were coming in from everywhere to give up all over all fronts, by the tens of thousands. A German "jeep" drove up with a couple of officers and a white flag. Thru an interpreter, they indicated that their Commander wanted to surrender his division, and was at his headquarters in a house down the road. Litchfield said that he got his S-4 or S-2, whichever is the intelligence officer (i just don't remember) and some non-coms and hopped in a few jeeps and followed the German officers. They pulled up at a big stone house and went inside, where the CG of the 90th P-G Div was waiting with his staff. As the senior Allied officer present, he took the surrender (and the pistol and holster) from the CG. This group and his division were soon thereafter turned over to Brits for internment, as the 10th Mtn was still on the move towards the Yugoslavian border. He's a cantankerous old coot, quite beyond storytelling as far as I can tell. Definitely does NOT feel as if he has to impress anyone. If you google his name you can get more on him, for those interested. Past President of the 10th Mtn Div Assoc and several associated entities. Drives a Subaru with 10th Mtn Div plates. I also bought a new, as in brand spankin new byf 43 from him in a Luger holster. The ac41 was fully loaded, both mags with Nazi ammo, he said it had been since the war.

Research indicates the commander of the 90th PG at the end of the war was General der Panzertruppe Gerhard Graf von Schwerin, the defender of Aachen.
