K98k without the 3 buttstock marks - curious to know more.

I'm used to K98k's having the 3 markings on the buttstock. However I've seen some without these marks. Interestingly these weren't serialed on the underside of the stock as those with 3 marks normally are.

I thought this was something they started doing in 1944 (because those I've seen without the 3 marks and serial all were from 1944). However now I've seen a 1941 which - for your information - comes directly from the person who stole it from the Germans during the war (matching numbers everywhere I looked). It lacks the 3 markings on the side of the buttstock and has no serial on the underside of the wood. Instead I found the wood to be serialed on the inside of the little top wood piece in front of the rear sight - just as on the 1944s I've seen without underside serial & the 3 markings.

Does someone here know more about this? Was there a system in this? Maybe tied to certain years/makers? It would be nice if you can add information. I tried to take photos but they're of poor quality unfortunately.
