    Springfield Model 1896

I have a chance to buy this Springfield Model 1896 rifle, and know next to nothing about them. I am told by a close friend who has had it in hand, that it is in wonderful condition.

Can any of you help me to determine a fair value, or even a ballpark price to work within, from these photographs? They are all I have right now.

    Thanks,
    Bob.

Commonly known as the US Krag.
    Cal 30-40Krag.
    About the smoothest action made.

I'm not up on particulars but see these $800-$1200.
    Very much room for speculation.

      I love my Krag.

I would put it at the lower end of the range MikeP posted (maybe a little lower even) due to the lack of bluing and no visible cartouche, but the poor pics make it hard to say for sure. I'm not saying I would pass on it though because it doesn't appear to be abused or messed with, but it just doesn't look like a high grade example either IMHO.

The serial number pegs the production as June 1898 according to Poyer's book. This is the same month the first US troops arrived in the Philippines and one month before the Battle of San Juan Hill.

If you aren't familiar with them, you will be amazed at how smooth the action is and the overall quality of production of what was just a regular military rifle. The fit and finish is nicer than most sporting rifles.
