    G98/40

I recently acquired a G98/40 rifle that is a little different than any I have seen before. This one looks as though it has been through an arsenal rework of some sort. I'm hoping someone can shed a little light on where this might have been done?

The bulk of the rifle serial numbers match except the magazine floorplate and the bolt. The bolt doesn't have any two numbers that match itself. The serial number on the bolt does not look like the typical G98/40 serial number as the letter is a capital letter. Is this a bolt from a Hungarian M43?

The stock has a typical arsenal repair, and is coated with what appears to be the Russian shellac that you normally see on M91/30 Mosin-Nagants.

There are no import markings. All of the original markings are intact, and there have not been any markings added.

Also, does anybody have any idea why G98/40 stocks often have the black line in the grain pattern? I assume this denotes a bad weather year that caused unusual tree growth in Hungary, but I don't know much about trees. It does seem like you see this line in about every G98/40 stock you see though; just curious about it.

Thanks in advance for any help.
