    Unknown Luger

    Hello forum...

    I got bored today and started looking at some Lugers I collected over the years.

    Here's one I am not sure of.

    I thought it was from WWI... but... it's not dated, and says: Germany to the side.

    Was this a pre or post war import? Is it 9 mm, or 30 cal.?

    It's in pretty nice shape, but.. the number to the magazine does not match the gun.

                        Looks like an Alphabet Luger (according to the Jan Still's classification system), which was formely knew as 1920 Commercial. The Crowned "N" are stamped on guns made in Germany for the civilian market. The "Germany" stamp points thatthis gun was imported by some dealer in US, probably during the 1920s. Most were chamberd for the .30 Luger but there are a few in 9mm Luger.

                        However, I do not like the Crown stamped below serial number in the frame and barrel. It was overstamped the letter suffix that was part of the serial number. I have no idea why someone would do so.

                            The crown stamp is noted on a very few 1920's police Lugers but I don't know that anyone has ever come up with an answer as to what it is. I think that this is the first import Luger I have seen with the stamp. As to calibre, try dropping a number 2 wooden pencil down the bore. If it fits it's a 9mm if not a .30 calibre.

                              I agree with Doug and GWA.. There's little doubt about the finish being original on this pistol. It's a nice one. Strange about the crown overstamp...
