Absolutely a fake, conversion. All Original carbines have longer chambers - the thick area at the rear of the barrel with the Mauser address - in order to handle the increased pressures a longer barrel generates. Lots of other "Tells". I have owned 4 original carbines over the years including #21, and #22. They were the only consecutively numbered pair I have ever seen put together. Good Collecting

When the chinese imports were flooding the country and common good condition broomhandle prices dropped from over $600 to less than $69 each, a couple of the importers started producing these fake carbines.
I remember before the Chinese imports I would pay over $300 for broken parts Broomhandles just to sell the parts. When the imports came the parts business died for me for at least 15 years. Now prices are back up to and even above where they were before the imports.

Just would like to add that I had checked my references and could see that:
- In fact there was (is) original Mauser carbines with the small ring hammer. Thanks to GWA for bring my attetion to this point.
- However, the highest serial number of authentic carbines lay in the 40000-50000 range, which were the first Standard Pre-War Models, made right after the design has been estabilized by Mauser. This one was clearly made with a M30 as a "donation gun", so it is not original.
- At last, but not the least, the front sight is exactly the same as a standard C96/M30 not the one expected for a carbine. All the C96 carbines I've seen has a rampant kind of front sight, no matter when it was made.
Thus, you took the right direction by letting this one pass.
Good hunting!
Douglas.
