    Rare C96 carbine

    I found this one for sale, but Can I have your opinion about it.
    I feel that wood has been broken and repair, and refinished .
    Doesn't seem to have been reblued but receiver condition seems different from the frame.
    Expert opinions?

                        It appears to be a 1970's conversion of a C96 to a carbine configuration. As you note the wood is not of the period and it is not European walnut. The front sight should be ramped and the rear sights of all recorded carbines were graduated to only 500m with one exception and that was an early model sighted at 1-10.

                        Of course it could possibly be a carbine that has simply been restored using new wood and incorrect sight. There is not enough detail in your first set of photos to say for sure. Can we see photos with the stock detached? Also what is the serial number?

                          Or, if you prefer, a "conversion" of a Commercial M30 into a C96 carbine.
                          The method of the stock attachement is entirely different (and poorly done) when compared with original examples. Besides that, if I remember correctly most (if not all) of the original carbines had Large Ring hammers and another safety pattern. In addition, Mauser inscriptions were totally different.

                          In my opinion just a gun to play around in the range, without any collectible value.

                            Douglas, original carbines ran the gamut from cone hammers, large ring, flat side and small ring. The one above is very similar to the later small ring with a few glaring exceptions. The serial number will close the lid on the coffin.

                              The Mauser logo stamped on the left side and the "italic" inscription of "Mauser Oberndorf..." are typical and exclusive features of M30 Broomhandles. And, as far as I know, there isn't any authentic C96 carbine from so late production. However, I should check my beloved Breathed & Shroeder book on C96s to give a more accurate report about this.

                              Anyway, I agree with you: the serial number might be the last nail in the coffin. Let's see!
