If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

            Hi Lorenz,

Thanks, that was really quick! I told him to take some pictures of any markings and will post those when I get them. This is already a ton more info then he knew before, so thanks very much

This is a .303 No 4 rifle - standard British infantry rifle of WW2 and later.

The spike bayonet was only used in WW2.

The WW1 version was a different design and used a 17 inch sword bayonet. This version continued in use in WW2 - by the Brits to start with - others like the Indians and the Australians used it for much of the war.

BTW - the 10 round box magazine is missing.

Look forward to seeing the markings - maybe able to tell you more.

              Richard

If you need a magazine, they can be found cheaply for around 25$. However, THAT RIFLE NEEDS CLEANED! See all the rust, a definite no-no. Use some Breakfree CLP to clean the rust, you might need to use some 0000 Brass wool. Some folks use 0000 steel wool, but to do it right get some brass wool and use it with the CLP for stubborn rust spots, although don't "overdo" it. Should clean up nice. I see these routinely for 125$-175$. Chris....

                  Hi guys,

Richie, thanks for the additional great info! I passed this along to my friend and he is very excited to finally know a little history with this piece.

His father got it, and actually turned it into a lamp . The pics are sideways, as it is still a working lamp in their house. I will pass the info on about cleaning it and I told him to try and restore it if its not all drilled to pieces for the wires. Thanks for the advice and prices Chris.

                  Thanks to all.
