Compare these two rifles from here http://pl.youtube.com/watch?v=h6_qJ8F_xss - 0:26 and the one from the pic below. Don't they look similar or.... the same? The same buttstock, the same finish in the same places, scope rail... Or is it just me?

I saw this exact one at the Aberdeen museum (which Dr. Atwater happens to be the curator of) and thought the exact same thing.
Could be the same. But then again, I asked him about it in person once (if they had or ever had a ZG1229) and he never had heard about it.
It was interesting to see that the weapons museum in Koblenz has a ZG1229 scope.

i've seen and handled this rifle at aberdeen as well, i seems unlikely that its the same as the zielgerat rifle for 2 obvious but not conclusive reasons: different optic and british uniform of demonstrator, does mod pattern room have this one?Comment

Well... We don't know for sure what happened to that particular rifle after the war and how it(?) ended up it the Aberdeen. ZG might have been taken by Britons or stolen/taken for some private collection. IF it's possible to identify that rifle it MIGHT be possible to track down the Vampire. In mid 2007, I contacted the Royal Armouries Pattern Room and inquired about the photo (as it is always referenced to the Pattern Room) and if they have a ZG1229. I was told that many people have inquired about the same photo and they didn't know.
Not knowing is better than no I suppose.
This could make an interesting mystery novel, call it "The Hunt for Hitler's Nocturnal Eye".

fwiw the aberdeen rifle is well documented in both peter senich's book on assault rifles and apg's book on german submachineguns and assault rifles. the apg book says it is a haenel made mp 44. i think i'm coming around to the distinct possibility its the same rifle, if only the person who put a strip of tape on the stock had done it a few years earlier...Comment

I'd say it is not the same, similar yes but not the same. The different finish was not that uncommon (esp. towards the end) due to various subcontractors of parts/sub assemblies. I've personally seen a "last ditch" StG44 and an MG42 all in "the white" with only traces of clear cellulose varnish on the metal. I've also seen several other StG44s more or less resembling the Aberdeen sample, I call them "rag-tags" or "qulits".
If you look closely it doesn't look like the upper receivers are the same.Comment

You may be right. One thing to do is to take that number on the scope mount and the code written on the sticker under the trigger (which probably is the museum catalog code for the weapon) and maybe that may lead somewhere.Originally posted by r_hufschmied View Post
