Why dont they make "machine shot guns"

I was wondering: why dont any models of submachine guns exist, that fire shotgun rounds? It seems like it would be a very destructive weapon at close range... so why dont any designs of "machine shotguns" exist?

JL, For one thing the recoil would be impractical for a submachine gun.....Controllabilty would be a problem.....It would be as punishing to the user as well I'm afraid......Bodes

They do make one and its called the AA12 and drum fed and fully auto. You can reduce recoil if you want but I guess that its not always the most practical weapon.

I could see this as a squad weapon where one or two guys have one, but even a semi-auto with a drum in a shotgun is incredibly destructive. The Saiga 12 can carry a 20 round drum and if you let loose with that you could just about take down a house. It's a real bad ass.

I have seen movies of this being fired and it is impressive and the rise of the gun is not as bad as you would expect. It can be efficently be fired in short bursts and it is very damaging.

There is also the South Korean USAS-12: http://world.guns.ru/shotgun/sh16-e.htm
The problem, as mentioned, is excessive recoil and short effective range in a cumbersome weapon. The closest thing to an effective Machine Shot Gun are the Mk.19 MOD3 and Mk.47 AGLs firing canister rounds.

There are a couple of others as well. HK had the CAW that they were dveloping plus the Striker and the PANCOR Jackhammer had FA variations. Also during the Vietnam War a SEAL had a Remington 1100 modified into a pretty efective hooch clearer. There are at least three others that I can't remember their names anymore. Now there is the METALSTORM weapons systems being developed that run the gammut from handgun to HMG to Grenade Launcher and their ROF is phenomenal.

shotguns already deliver multiple projectiles on target with one squeeze of the trigger, making them full auto is redundant.

They do make one! Mentioned above, it's nickname is the "street sweeper". And yes, it's name is well earned.
