strange 50 cal ammo box but small

found this so unusual I had to buy it. Anybody have any period idea on this, I figured early ww2?

There are no seals on this can. no rubber anything in the tops, so ....I know what gun shoots from it, but different than encountered on a regular basis.

dimentions are :6" wide on top 8" tall 12"Long,metal strap holders 2"wide1.25 inches long on straploopStrap is 1"widestrap approx 7"long for web handle in OD color , 3" on closed front hasp (tall)i wanted to addd the dimentions as its hard to tell the size, but its about the size of a .30cal box from ww2 with the end snap lock.

Thanks , thats what i thought , as the later boxes kept out water better. This one is real minty inside though. Almost like it wasnt used very much.

I have had a couple of these and two that were made of aluminum. Everything I have understood about these cans is they were generally US Army air corps used. The aluminum examples I had were no doubt aircraft related as the labels pasted on the inside of the leather padded lid listed belt loading with incindiary and AP rounds.
