    My 1st 98K!!!

Hi all...I just got my 1st 98K today through the kindness of a friend who knew I was looking for one. She's nothing special so I won't waste time posting a picture. BBL and Rcvr match (sn:7992) but thats where it ends....the rest is parts but its in great shape w/nice crisp waffenamts. Its a 243 dated 1940 which I think is Mauser Werke, Berlin??? She came with a winter trigger guard, frt. sight hood, and repro sling for $250US. How'd I do????? Thanks in advance for info/comments.....best...rich

Rich, The winter trigger is very likely a postwar Czech one.....At the end of the day it will always be a parts gun.......But in comparison to what RC's are getting, I'm sure you did okay......Bodes

      98k....

Thanks for the reply....I understand that it'll always be a parts gun but thats ok by me....99.9% of the people who'll ever see it coulden't tell an "all matching" masterpiece from a tomato stake anyhow. You're probably right about that winter trigger guard too....any way to tell for sure???? thanks...best, rich

Rich, Winter triggerguards are believed to have been designed during WW2, but quite likely never got put into production......And IF so, only in very limited numbers......Bodes

Congrats on the rifle. They sure look cool don't they? $250 is a pretty good price. And, yes, the 243 is made by Mauser Werke AG, Borsigwalde and according to the book Back Bone of the Wehrmacht, that model didn't have a sight hood.

Any plans on taking it to the shooting range?

Thanks Bodes for the trigger guard info...i wasn't aware that they were that much of an oddity seeing all the German ostfront experience. I'll probably start looking around for a standard one to replace it with.

Thanks as well Jason for confirming the MFG. and the sight hood info. I gotta admit, I do like the look of it better WITH the hood so at the risk of offending you, i'll probably leave it in place. I do appreciate you informing me of how its SUPPOSED to look though. I always liked the looks of this model mauser for a bolt gun. it ranks right up there with a 1903 springfield. I know its not a real collectable but its just right for me. As for getting her to a range......seeing as I'm in the Nat. Guard and Run Range Ops. once a month at our local Training Site, I think that it may be in the cards!!! Thanks again for both of your replys......best, rich

Offend me? Pffft. There is nothing that says it can't be on there or wasn't on there at some time in its career in the Wehrmacht. I was just mentioning the info I had as to the original way it left the factory. I am sure soldiers used to fix up the guns they relied on as long as it fell under regulations.

hi Jason...I didn't think I would be but just wanted to be polite. Some folks take strong offence to not having things just so - but you don't sound like the type. Not to keep pestering but can you add any further light to what the other gentleman mentioned regarding the winter trigger housing? Anyhow...thanks for speaking with me and sharing you knowledge....best, rich

Rich, Concerning the front sight protector......Even though it may have come from the factory w/o the sight protector, it very well may have been rebarreled some time later, or serviced by an armourer....The protector being added as an upgrade.......Bodes

Hi Jason and Bodes.....i've done some research on the trigger housing and it indeed is most likely a post-war add on. I'm going to try and find a proper one to replace it with.....gonna keep the sight hood tho. Thank you both for your help and research on my behalf. Its great speaking with both of you....best rich
