I just saw an mp-44 in star wars!!!

    yep there's no mistaking it!

in the scene from empire strikes back where the rebel forces line up for battle you can clearly see the front sight and ribbed part above the barrel of an mp-44 protruding from all that stuff they added to dress it up.

also the empire is known to carry modified mg-42's

Han solo carries a broomhandle and the storm troopers have modified sterling smgs.

You mean the 34's. 42's were in Aliens

I think the old Star Wars movies from when I was a kid in the late 1970's were filmed at a studio outside of London, England. The vintage German weapons were provided by Bapty, Ltd. of London, who are a (maybe even THE) major supplier of firearms to the British film industry. Bapty, Ltd. operates under special licenses so that its guns are live and uncut. Obviously, they modify the guns to fire blanks in the movies.

Knowing Bapty I'd say they rarely "chop" something up, not from their own inventory at least. All modifications are either clamped on or framed in for easy reversal. A well known exception are the M41A1 Pulse Rifles from the Aliens movie, these were specially commissioned by Director James Cameron himself who took great interest in their design. But even that design is approx. 75% reversible.

If you look in the first Star Wars movie (or 4th, dooh) many of the weapons are hardly modified at all. The MG34 live and stunt guns are unmodified as is the Lewis gun (sans magazine), the Sterling SMGs have a little sight assembly added and the mag shortened. In the very first public release of the original movie (on VHS) you can actually see shell casings fly here and there, I think it is edited out on the DVD release?

Most of the more elaborate, or original if you like, (and some less) Star Wars designs are non live fire stunt guns in resin, rubber and fiberglass.

The Sterlings used in the film were cast off an original part by part and then assembled. Then the add ons were added.

What was left looked like this.

Close up view of a replica that is actaully better then the movie used stuff as all the parts are real. To be seen on the barral is windshild wiper blade material. A hengster counter on the side and that's a WWII tank scope mounted on top that would be worthless except that star wars nuts drive up the prices on ebay when they come up.

Edit: Note the magazine has been drastically shortened.
