    I am a bit troubled by what is already noted. The barrel is wartime period. Problem is there is no 0,2 rebarrel mark. Stock has been cleaned and definately "sanded". There appears alot of touch up cold blue in areas. The serial on the barrel appears to have been applied after the finish.Some bad karma here for my eyes from what the photos show me.
    There was an old german fella out of K of P in PA that did alot of luger renumber/refinishing...he was good and rifle "work" was not beneath his talent.
    That the front sight base has not been replaced or cut for a hood with a wartime barrel is odd as well. I have seen more than a handfull of matching 98k's that were rebarreled by skunks - some serialed the barrels to match some did'nt , but the lack of typical depot traits usually begs a closer look of the rifles' finish and apparent other oddities.

    PS - the stock serial appears a bit crisp for all the cleaning done and I'm fairly positive I see vestiges of a former serial under some of these 'matching' serials.

      James, you are correct in that there are no depot markings on the wrist or underside of the stock. Also, there are no inspection markings on the bolt shroud.

        DG ; do you remember the seller of this rifle - if so is he still around ?. About two years ago C.Gastior was selling a handfull of gew98's that were badly monkeyed with...a buddy bought one and it was not even safe to shoot due to the skunks rebarrel job. In the short CG pulled those boinked with peices and refunded my friend promptly when brought to his attention and even said whom he had bought this group of rifles from - a guy in PA of all places.
        I lived in the peoples republik of new jerky until dec '93 and visited alot of the big PA shows often....and I saw this kind of boinkery then in gobs.It was a semi professional cottage industry to frig Lugers and 98k's to "matching" and move them. Same goes for helmets only that boinkery started way earlier.

            Jim is right of course, this would be a re-barrel as Geco went to cxm no earlier than 1940, - its easy enough to tell on this rifle if Denny takes the stock off as the blank provider should be recorded (Geco is one of the few who did this even as late as 1944- few did till the end, Geco use bys/Ruhrstahl in most all cases); Geco also rarely supplied directly to assemblers, Borsigwalde never so far recorded (I have quite a few recordings for Geco) they did supply Gustloff directly for production later in the war. As to the "0,2" its not always above the woodline, though it usually is.<O</O
            Anyway, some certainty can be had by checking the below woodline- if interested of course.. I have done a massive 8 month long study (8+ months it took as much because of the haphazard methods I took more than what it should have taken.. hindsight being what it is..) on barrel coding and finished only a couple weeks back, quite a fascinating subject and one truly overlooked in reference books.<O</O

                  with all the ppl looking at this rifle you alllllllll missed that the buttplate has been renumbered and so has the front band been renumbered. I think a stock has been "fixed " to go with a matching action. I all think stock serial to crisp with all hte sanding present. i to see that the cocking piece looks funny. no pics of the rear band but it will probably also be renumbered as with the handguard.

                    V ; The more you look at this boinker rifle the more you see. For all the rah rah guys that love it...I got a bridge in brooklyn made out of matched 98k's for sale...any serious offer considered.
