    98k techincal experts help!

    I accidentally posted a question about my 98K in the large ordinance fourm and Gene has been helping me there but I thought I would open it up to more people...

    I asked a gunsmith and he said the reason my 98K is shooting high is because it is on a trajectory or arc out to 500m and is designed to shoot that way, being high closer but still within a body mass

    is this correct or should I get a second opinion??

      Sounds about right, can't quote exactly for the K98 but it is certainly correct for the rifle i used in the mob. Point of aim was on the patch but the strike was expected at the top of the patch, ergo with the balistic arc on the flight of the round the point of impact would be in an enlarged box in the center of the mass. Close range slightly high, long range slightly low. That of course is working to the modern calc on estimated average engagement ranges. All rounds as you undoubtedly know as a shooter will travel this arc. Its only when you are dealing with an absolute personal weapon that you can start playing with sights versus load out . The k98 was built with the average joe in mind and with stock ammo as normal supply. Mind you IF you did hit him at 500 you will probably be massaging his toes ! Good enough to get his attention!

          K98

          I have been on several K98 forums and they all complain that they shoot high. Both my all matcher and Yugo K98 shoot high even with WW2 dated German ammo!! In some cases, not even on paper. That said, the K98 sight's are horrible. I don't know how the soldiers used them in combat, but for the time they were much the same as the 03 and other flat leaf sight's. I think the peep sight was the best combat sight overall. Just my opinion.

            I have never had that severe a problem with the two 98ks I own or any other that I have shot. The range markings on the rear sight leaf are graduated to the ballistics of issue German service ball ammunition. Any other ammunition will shoot high or low at any given range setting depending on the ballistics of the ammo involved.
            With the rear sight set at it's lowest setting (I honestly forget but I believe it is 100!! Both rifles in storage), and using ammunition ballistically equivelant to the service round, and shooting off a bench, the impact of the rounds should be not much more than 6 inches high at 100 yards. This takes into account the ballistic arc and the rifle is designed to hit center mass on a human body. That has been my usual experience. The sights are graduated in meters but the real difference between meters and yards doesn't become important untill about 600 meters.
            I have also never had any difficulty with using 98k sights, or any other open sights. It is a funtion of proper sight alingment and staying focused on the front sight.

                All of my weapons are in storage and I havn't shot them for five years, but in the 7.92mm calibers, I was shooting Yugo made ball, which was the same load by the same company or arsenal that made it for their army. It was very close to the German balistics and used in all their German and Yugo made Mausers and MG-42s. I can't remember the name of the company and am unsure if it is even still imported. Maybe some other members can help out here. It was new, non-corrosive, and reliable.

                    No, the Yugo production ammo I was using was NON-corosive. It was berdan primed so non-reloadable (with American components)
                    I wish I could remember the name of the company as they had quite a line of military calibers for use in Mil-surp guns.

                        Hansen might be it. I have also heard that Olympic makes good loads although I havn't tried them. It sounds like they attempt to duplicate the German service load.

                            The arsenal that produced this ammo was importing it before the breakup of Yugoslavia. I suspect Partizan may be the same company in Serbia.
                            At any rate it was good, fresh, non-corrosive 7.92X57 berdan primed.
