Lovely looking rifle there Bill ! There is something about the early Mausers that screams out quality and craftsmanship.

I must dig out a few of my 71's and 71/84's and get some photos taken. I started my rifle collection with a few of these old Mausers here in the UK.
An old guy was moving overseas and we got talking at a show. He mentioned he had a number of old guns he wasn't able to take with him, would I be interested? Well I went round to his house the following week and he pulled rifle after rifle out of an old wardrobe, eight in all ! A Gras carbine, a Chassepot, a Mauser 1871, two 71/84's, a Martini and a couple of Remington rolling blocks. I asked him how much he wanted for them and he said nothing, I could have them !

I've added a few more Mausers to my collection since then and they've been a pretty good investment with prices for decent, matching number rifles nudging the magic £1k mark.

That said, I'd never sell any of the guns the old boy gave me and hope to be able to pass them on to a young collector gratis when I'm an old boy myself !

Wow, they don't get much more pristine than that! How did you manage to find an unfired one?

Damn fine one Bill. It's very rare to find a Prussian 71/84 in that condition. Most like that I have had or seen were Bavarians from Amberg. Is the butt plate unit marked?

Wow Bill, that is a superb 71/84! I have never seen one so clean. I had one years ago but it was not nearly as nice.
