    New Ithaca in town...

    Hello Gents.

Wanted to post some pics of my new Ithaca M1911A1 pistol.
It has the very rare black finish, all appropriate military markings.
    Let me know your thoughts.
    I just love .45's !!!

Closer shot right side with markings...
There is a circular marking ( crossed cannons ??)below slide, to the rear
by finger grips on the slide. the marking is light and incomplete.
There is "7" on the trigger guard as well.
Can anyone comment on these ??? They elude my knowledge....

Shot is period holster/thong. Holster is unmarked, but I really love
          the patina....

Thats a true beauty!! Are sure you're super happy right now. I have a '43 Remington Rand with the same cross cannons. I dont remember it was simply an arsenal mark or a re-worked mark, dont have my reference books on hand. Let see what other have to say....

Throughout Ithaca production they used two finish methods which the first was the very early guns - Dulite blue over a sandblast finish and it went from about 856,000 thru about 880,000. After the Dulite blue over sandblast finish, Parkerizing was authorized by the Ordnance Dept. and all makers switched from bluing to Parkerizing. There is nothing special about the finish on your Ithaca except it's exceptional condition. It is also one of the more rare 'Double Stamp" guns where you see the M1911 A1 U.S. ARMY on both the slide and frame. A few Ithaca's in the 908,000 thru 1,210,000 (serial split in there so it's much smaller than it looks) used replacement slides in regular production so that's why you see the nomenclature on both the slide and frame. The Ordnance wheel was stamped upon acceptance by the Ordnance Department signifying it passed inspection and was accepted under the authority of Colonel Frank J Atwood. The 7 and double arrow are internal marks signifying the assembler and internal inspection controls.

That's a beauty! and the shot cartridges are highly collectible also. Nice stuff.

Very nice! And thanks for sharing. In regards to "black" Parkerizing, it is a funtion of how long the parts are in the solution. I worked at a weapons repair shop in Hawaii whre we did depot level rebuild on everything from small arms to howitzer parts. The longer you leave parts, especially small parts, in the solution the darker they become. We would sometimes "custom finish" 1911's for favorite officers by giving the pistol an overall nice dark gray finish and all of the small parts (slide stop, safety, mag catch, ect) a nice black finish. Nice two tone effect. I forget what ordnance specs for parkerizing were back then.

                  Cheers,
                  Johnnie
