    byf42 value

    I have a byf42 P-38. Researching, I discovered Mauser made less than 15,000 in 1942. The pistol is a solid 96% with some wear to the bore. I am trying to find a value on it but the best I could do is a 3 year old link on an example that was grey from wear and valued at $1000. Can anyone give me a better idea on value?

    Does it have a matching Mag?

    A Thousand bucks is on the high side for this piece, but not impossible if as described.

      Hi Mike,

      Mauser never numbered their mags. Only Walther did that until early 1942.

      Stephen,

      To give a good estimate of the gun I would have to either hold it in my hands or see really good pictures of it. The serial number and type of finish is very important.

        I am not equiped to take photos but the serial # range is 73xx, no letter code and it has a blued finish. It has holster wear but nothing excessive.

          What I was referring to on the finish is that some of the byf42s had what is called a "dusty blue" finish. It looks like it was sand or bead blasted so it has a "matte" appearance. That finish will bring more money than the standard military blue finish.

          Also, one of the big factors having to do with value is how well the blue has held up. You can have two guns with identical blue wear and yet one will still have the deep blue finish while the other may have a washed out blue appearance. The deeper blue will command a premium.

          Also, a lot of people don't include the grip strap in their appraisal of the finish. I have seen guns that were called 98% but had no grip strap finish left. I include the grip strap in my estimates either as a part of the total finish or, if I'm talking to a more advanced collector, I will give the grip strap as a separate percentage. Grip strap wear is kind of expected so some collectors don't count off as much for it. I, however, am a grip strap guy so the finish on it is very much a part of the gun and very important for me.

          If you can tell me about the grip strap and what the general appearance of the blue is (I understand you probably won't have the eye for that) I will try to give you a guess as to value.

            The blue is not matte but bright. It is strong overall including the front strap. It has some holster high light areas & a few misc. hairline scratches. There is some light pitting to the bore.

              HI Stephen,

              I am going to value your gun at $1400 to $1600 based on what you said. byf42s are scarce. If I could see your gun, I might value it higher but I have found that being conservative is best when I can't examine. I paid $700 for my first one in 1991 and the blue was somewhat washed out on it.

              Keep in mind that markets in different parts of the country vary. I am in North Texas and it is typically one of the less expensive places to buy guns.

              Here is a link to my example. It has the matte blue and correct double E/135 waffenamt mag. Being early and nearly new I feel it would bring a premium price to the right buyer.

                Holy crap Leon, that is an INCREDIBLE byf 42. I have one that my sister's husband's father brought back after serving in North Africa and Italy. It is war-worn, but not too bad. Dull dusty grey-blue finish with a slightly rough bore that still shoots bullseyes at 35 feet. I've never seen one like yours, not that my collection is as advanced as many here.

                    Call me silly but i would pay 2k I am missing that one,money is not as important as the desire to fill a hole,the disease of a pasionate collector!

                        I was able to acquire that byf42 in 1994 out of a very advanced collection. The collector had been a full time collector and was selling out and was very condition oriented. He worked with me and I ended up getting about 1/2 of his collection over about 3 years.

                        Stephen, as I mentioned, if I could actually see your gun I could give a better appraisal. Nothing beats holding a gun in your hand and looking at it with your own eyes. A really minty example in your serial range could easily add $400 to $600 to the value I gave. That last 1 or 2 percent REALLY jacks up the price.
