I Used A Degreaser To Remove The Varnish From The Stock And It Also Removed The Black Paint From Most Of The Parts . You Should Disassemble The Entire Rifle And Do The Parts Seperately.if That Does Not Work Try A Paint Solvent In A Well Ventalated Area . Some Times There Is A Half Way Decent Finish Under The Paint. Good Luck

Brake fluid works pretty good and does not hurt finish.

        Use Dot 3.

When I was stripping the shellac from the stocks of my Russian capture K98k's, I used denatured alcohol. As I dodn't take-down the weapons completely (only removed the barrels/actions and barrel bands), some metal was still on the stocks.

I was surprised to find that the denatured alcohol also removed the cheap Ruskie paint from the metal pieces too!

Try it- I hope this helps!
