        Those codes are for the manufacturers I believe.

          Correct, all british factories were issued codes.

          Prefixed with N,M,S This was basically North , Midlands, South. General location, the number was specific to the manufacturer,

          S51 for example found on the No4 t sniper was for Holland and Holland in London.

          Their is a book called the Broad Arrow which has a listing of companies against
          thier wartime numbers plus a load of info on the marking of UK and commonwealth weapons.

            M76 E. R. Edwards Limited, Moseley.

            Moseley is near Birmingham in the English Midlands.
