I recently came by this P38 but know nothing about guns so I would be grateful if someone could share their knowledge on this piece.

Very Nice Late War Spreewerke! Your Serial Number puts it almost at the end of the WAR! Probably mid April 45'. The other mark next to the Eagle 88 is a British Proof mark I believe....dont quote me on that one. I am sure Leon and the like will be chiming in... very nice. Thanks for sharing this with us.
      Regards,

That is a Spreewerk (cyq, cvq code) that was made very near the end of production at the plant. Spreewerk was one of three P.38 manufacturers and was located in Czechoslovakia. As Mike said, that looks like a British firing proof. The E/88 was a "waffenamt" (weapon's office) stamp that was assigned to the Spreewerk plant. Nice looking example and it's unusual to see one that late.

        Regards, Leon

Leon is right, Bill and k9mike are almost right. The factory names SPREEWERK, not Spree Werk or Spreewerke. About cyq and cvq concise: http://forums.p38forum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14249

British proof mark is the stamp that one of the 2 proof houses in the uk (London or Birmingham) stamp on the gun to prove its been deactivated to the at the time specifications you should also have a deactivication certificate (which will tell you wich proof house it was deactivated at).

It is ORM (often repeated mistake), like Waffenamp instead Waffenamt. Correct information makes the validity od the forum.

                            Nice gun.

The British proof mark indicates post war use in this country - possibly a war souvenir or just an ordinary pistol shooter back in the (good old ?)days when we could do such things.

The letters (lwft and right) on British proof means year of proof. If you will let me know about this letters, I can tell you a year of proof.
