Last weekend I got my hands on a nice G98 from 1916. Only problem is: in the past they applied some brown varnish on the metal. Now at this time I managed to clean the bolt but as I want to remove for example the floorplate, everything is stuck to each other thanks to the varnish. Any idea on how to remove/ disassemble this without damaging the metal?

Varnish seems to be easily stripped with acetone and some of the specific varnish removers are very thin liquid in consistancy and seem to contain a lot of acetone.
The above will not hurt the wood or metal and should be applied and allowed to work up the old varnish and then wiped off with cloths or paper towels. Usually several applicatons are needed.
I've soaked rust blues parts in these chemicals for weeks with absolutly no adverse effects and your rifle should be rust blued being a 1916 date.

The stock isn't my biggest concern because it was damaged in the past so I'm planning on changing it. For now I applied varnish remover and WD40 to loosen things up but so far no result. The floorplate is still stuck tight. Guess I'll be using acetone now...
Thx for the tips Phil, I'll keep you posted and I'll try to post some pics...
