    Considering P38

I am looking at a really nice byf 44 all matching with a jvd magazine. I understand by this point magazines are not serialed to the gun. However this one is stamped with the serial number on the spine in nice neat numbers. The gun is SN 3669 b and the mag is marked 3669. Is this the origional mag to the gun. As a subcontractor were byf's ever issued with jvd mags. Also, about when in 1944 would this gun have been made. Also what would the correct holster be and where could I find a nice one....Thanks Jimmy

    P38

The stamped magazine is most likely a postwar East German/other European power stamping. Pistol would have been manufactured fairly early in 44, serial blocks run from 0-9999, then start over with an "a" suffix, and run through again to 9999, then b block...etc, etc, etc.... Chris

      Hi VIPER,

Mauser never serial numbered magazines. Walther is the only one who did and then only until early 1942. We do believe that jvd mags were probably issued with Mausers but they are more common in Spreewerk P.38s and as spare mags. Most collectors like to have a Mauser marked mag in their Mauser P.38. Your "b" block byf44 would have been made in about December, 1944.

Most any late war holster would be okay for your gun. They were not matched by maker so it just doesn't matter. Most collectors like to have a holster with the same date as their gun.

Since your mag was likely numbered to the gun in the post war period, be cautious of a reworked pistol.

      Regards, Leon

        Chris,

Mauser did not start their serial numbers over every year. In fact, Walther is the only one who did. Mauser and Spreewerk started with 1 to 10000, the 1a to 10000a, and kept going until they hit 10000z. Mauser started over with 1 but, since Spreewerk did not put dates on their guns, they started over with a1.

Would not the b suffix be fairly early in the byf 44 production run in 1944 rather than later. In other words 3669 b would be the 33669th gun made in 1944.....How would you tell a reworked gun...Thanks Jimmy

You kinda missed the point. Mauser (byf) didn't follow the normal sequencing of serials and suffix letters with P.38s.

Mauser Oberndorf started '44 with the "o" block not the "a" block as you would think. When Mauser got to "z", they started in on "a" blocks still with a byf44 marked slide.

Check out this pdf file of production info...

              Hi Jimmy,

As I stated in my previous post, Mauser DID NOT start their serial numbers over from 1 every year. They started making P.38s in late 1942 and continued on from serial number 1 until they got to 10000z in the Fall of 1944. They then started the serial numbers over from 1 again. Since the date on the pistol serial number 1 dated "44" was different from the "42" production serial number 1, they didn't consider the serial number to be a duplicate.

They numbered the P.08s that they made from 1934 to 1942 the same way, by the way.

Walther is the only P.38 maker who started their serial numbering from 1 each year.

To identify a reworked/dipped gun, it would require some experience with such. The most obvious tell tale sign is that the locking block actuator pin is black. All of those should be in the white. Also, any odd markings and bad finish would be obvious to a trained eye. I would have to see detailed pictures to give an opinion.

              Regards, Leon

                Bob,

Remember that serial numbering started in the "no letter suffix" for the first 10,000 guns. The "a" block would have been the second 10,000 guns made.

                Regards, Leon

Thanks............Locking block pin is in the white, as is the locking block. It does appear to be the origional finish.........Is Ebay a good place to hunt some WaA 135 magazines..........Thanks Jimmy

                      nope,

ebay know became the gayest company in the world.

they decided to ban the sale of magazines just because that crazy kid who should have been on his anti-depressant medication bought magazines from ebay.

what the hell is ebay's logic in this?

I mean seriously, Ebay still sells holsters, right?

so it's dangerous for someone to be able to buy extra magazines, but what if someone decides to have extra holsters to hold more guns that already have one magazine.

by Ebay's, weak-ass and gay logic, shouldn't having extra holsters be more deadly too?

God I hate ebay so much, ever since they pulled by german paratrooper knife sale, they really pissed me off. they bow down to any politically correct hype there is.

so ebay and that crazy kid at virginia tech really screwed us collectors...
because we used to be able to find original magazines on ebay for a decent price, like walther PP original flat bottom magazines for 50 to 80 bucks.

but now that no more ebay? that means the gun dealers are the only people we can buy from, so get used to 200 dollar and up magazines.

Rick, I'm with you on EVERYTHING but this one statement. Since I'm a country southern red-neck who loves guns and the freedom to buy and sell guns at any time I darn well please I feel they are the ones who are politically incorrect. I'm with you though, Ebay blows!! Alex

I hate to toot my own horn, but I've said all along that ebay was crap! In fact, I call it "ecrap" now. Ever since they banned the sale of anything "nazi, SS, or anything with a swastika" on it, I've stopped shopping there for stuff. Plus there are literally a ton of fakes on ecrap, so beware!

If you want to shop on auctions for stuff, go to gunbroker, or auctionarms. I haven't had any problems with either of these sites.

                              wow, you didn't know that?

they are anti-everything except extreme political correctness.

The CEO of Ebay, I forget her name, was once CEO of Mattel or some other toy company. I'm pretty sure that either she herself is extremely liberal, or the board of ebay who worries about loosing public stock-holders is extremely left-wing.

they seem to waste a lot of resources just hunting down anything that is not politically correct.

what I really hate about ebay is that they have tons of smut and porn, but they won't let you sell a german para trooper knife!! (somehow, they know of an old law against gravity knives because in the 1960's gang used a modern version) so stupid
