Colt 'Lightning Slide Action Medium Frame. These rifles were in cal. 32/20, 38/40 and 44/40...These were calibers which were shared with Colt's Single Action Revolvers Model of 1873 and Double action Model of 1878 Frontier Revolvers.. So the rifle could serve as a companion weapon, to the pistol and vise versa...BILL

The Colt Lightening rifle caused quite a rift between Colt and Winchester. Because of prior cooperation on the use of the 44-40 (and later cartidges 32-20 and 38-40) cartridge for both the 1873 model P (peacemaker) and the Winchested 1873 (and later models) lever actions, Winchested was shocked that Colt would go into business competing with Winchester. When Winchested advised Colt that they would start developing pistols, the Colt Lightening rifle was suspended. The Colt Lightening was the fastest shooting rifle of it's time and possibly would have overtaken the success of the Winchester lever action series.

I've got to be honest here; I don't think I've even seen one of these before? (However, I don't collect old west stuff, so I don't go looking for it either.) But these are very cool, and very interesting history lesson for me here!
                      Keep them coming Bill!
