    P08 Markings?

    Hi All,

Sorry if this is a real stupid question but I just bought a Luger that is marked 42 on the top and is dated 1939. Not S/42 just 42. What does this mean? I did a search and found no matching threads. I will post some pics tomorrow.

    Thanks in advance!

Sorry I was not searching correctly. I see the 42 is for byf. I will post pics of the pistol tomorrow.

Well whether it is 42, S/42 or even byf... those are all codes for Mauser. 42 isn't the code for byf... they are all just different codes for Mauser.

I might be wrong here, but wouldn't S/42 be the correct toggle code for a '39 dated chamber? Were there 42 toggle codes on '39 dated chambers? Is this P.08 matching?

Most of the 1939 Mauser P.08s were coded with just "42". Only the early ones had the "S/42" code.

          Leon is correct.
According to Jan Still's book the change over from S/42 to 42 was in April.
          Serial range is 200r - 8250z
Black plastic grips were introduced soon after and an estimated 85,500 were made.

          Photos please......

          Steve.

What is this Luger worth? What would be the chances of finding the original magazine

              Thanks in advance,

              Bill
