I have a model 38 carbine, all matching with the mum but unfortunately there is a piece of what appears to be lead at the beginning of the chamber. I stuck a rod down and it is only a small piece at the beginning. Did anyone ever hear of this being done? I was thinking about trying to remove it with a soldering torch. I would like to sell it as is but I know it would hurt the value. Any information would be helpful. Thanks, DEL PANFINI

This may be someones amature attempt at de-mill. Are you sure it is lead?
There are a number of lead removal solvents you can purchase. Try Brownells on line. They may also offer you advice if you request it. If that doesn't work, take it to a competent gunsmith. Be carefull of trying to heat it out yourself. If you are not experienced in this type of thing you could ruin both finish and metal temper. Good luck, as I hate to see these older weapons out of service.
Cheers,
Johnnie

Model 38 carbine questions???
Thanks for your replies. I tried to knock it out with a metal rod but the rod start bending. I don't want to try a wooden dowel because it can get crushed in there & block the bore. I might just sell it as is. As far as why they put the lead in the barrel, I was told the vet's wife did not like guns & that was his alternative to keeping it. Thanks again, DEL
