    Springfield M.1911

    Hello,

I know you guys probably prefer the German type pistols, but I thought I'd share my most recent find.

A pretty decent early 1914 Springfield M.1911. Most of the parts are matching "S" marked with the exception of a couple smaller parts, but if I'm correct Springfield was inconsistant with its markings. Original Springfield double diamond walnut grips and a lot of the original finish still remains which I feel is a bonus.

I do need an ORIGINAL landyard Loop Springfield magazine so if anyone might have one or has any leads I would be most appreciative.

    Hope you like,
    Steve

Very nice early Springfield. What's the mark on the rear of the barrel hood extension? *NOTE... You'll probably have to use a magnifier to see it.

Only the very first early Springfields used the short stubby hammer and they are seldom seen today. Nice find!

It's pretty rare that Springfield didn't mark the small parts, but there other ways to determine if they are Springfield parts because they used some techniques in manufacture none of the others used. The Springfield FPS plate, MSH, Slidestop, Barrel bushing and probably other parts all have Springfield specific manufacture details to tell if they are not S marked. Most parts are marked in positions you have to disassemble to see....like the back of the slidestop, the back of thumb safety, on the inside point of the barrel bushing, and so on.

The folded bottom Springfield mags are fairly common and you should pay around $175 - $225 for one. Some will ask a lot more, but they are still found in that range pretty easily.

Thanks for the information. I have not completely broke it down. I know the slide stop is "S" marked, but I am unsure about the MSH and FPS plate.

I believe the stubby hammer was only used on the first 3500 examples produced in 1914. I'll also have to take a second look at the barrel. Not really sure what you see. It is "S" marked, but maybe I need to take a closer look.

              Thanks,
              Steve

                Steve,
I don't see anything on the barrel, I'm hoping you do and can tell us what the marks are on the very rear of the barrel hood extension. (The part that makes contact with the slide breech face.) Springfield marked their barrels on that small face and they changed the mark(s) from time to time and what you see will tell whether the barrel is correct for your serial range.

                  Hello,

The only marking is the "S".

From my Clawson reference book it looks to be correct for my serial number range. The book shows Springfield barrels marked sometimes with an "S" and no markings on the hood extension and sometimes marked with an "S" and a "M" on the hood extention from serial numbers 72,571 to 77,000 Unless I'm reading it wrong which could be the case?

Absolutely correct... I didn't want to lead you to your conclusion and yet the possibility existed there might be a mark which would have been wrong. Your Springfield appears completely original and a very nice addition to a collection. Again, nice find.
