      .

Those old timers IMO could either be confused that it was Phosphorus as a tracer is commonly thought of by Non eod troops as phosphorus, or it could have been the more stable Red phosphorus that behaves like WP when crossed with heat or friction, and is not effected by contact with air.

I think you are right. They just thought that since WP was in the grenades it made sense that it was in anything that burned. Maybe like mixing fluorescent and phosphorescent. Different electron spin states but to the average person who cares. Now that I think about it I don't care anymore. LOL Honk if you hate PChem. LOL No offense to the physical chemists in the group. Yes Lee I know you are looking but not writting.

That is interesting and adds to all the many variations that exist. I have not seen one of those. Who made them? (US military or commercial contract for UK?) Were they tungston core or steel jacket?

The round has a R A headstamp. I will check it when I get home. It is the same type as the one with the extra strong crimp round for the primer.

I don't know what type of core it has.

            .

Yep....just like people mix up Incindiary munitions like thermite grenades, incindiary rockets or projectiles with being white phosphorus. The Smoke rounds are for making smoke from the WP. The WP also has other target uses in addition to smoke but is not the same as incindiary munitions although the same effect comes from the presence of the WP and WP could be used in the same effect on some targets.

There are alot of ordnance myths which are urban legends. I like to think its good because it meant they were no wondering whats inside the round and not thinking about their real job! We might have been speaking german now if that was the case!
