K98 What do you think?

This is definitely out of the realm of the "best 98". I really need some advice here. I have a chance to buy this 98 that is pictured. Most of the bluing is gone, mis-matched bolt. no sling but a mirror bore and it is tight as a drum. All of the other numbers match except for the bolt. Stock has seen some abuse. Cleaning rod which appears original to the rifle. These are the only photos I could get and am really naive as to some of the numbers. I have to make the deal either tomorrow or Sun. Any ideas as to value? Would sure appreciate some input. Tomt

I'm not sure the Sauer's salt blue finish (or anyone else's) held up as good as Mauser's. I've seen a good many Sauer early rifles that looked about like this one metal wise.

I have an idea on value, but for a while I'll let others offer their take on that.

This is the way that rifles that saw several years (4-5) of real use in combat conditions looked.

i actually just bought a 147 1940 bolt mismatch today. I paid around $430.

If these are the only photos that the seller is willing to pony up, I would be a little wary. Who knows what the rest of it looks like? Did you get more pics, because you can't see the cleaning rod in these particular pictures. Any seller who claims that he can't give you any more pictures is probably one to look out for.

This is definitely a shooter more than a display piece. The stock has the distinctive reddish lacquer that you see on Russian Captures, but it isn't marked as such with the distinctive "X" mark on the receiver. The swazes in the waffenamts are also either very faint or have been pinged; this also affects the value. It also would have been nice if the dealer had given you a photo of the bore, to prove that it as good as the dealer claims it is, before you buy this rifle and find out that it has a bore that looks like the inside of a sewer pipe.

The fact that the only mismatched part is the bolt is definitely a plus. IMHO, this is a $200-$250 rifle. I personally wouldn't pay much more than that.

76white02's is probably a $350-$400 gun, depending on the condition of the bore (hopefully very good), because it is obviously in very nice external condition.

Tomt, here are a few more photos of mine. Its totally unmessed with. The stock is unsanded, the parts are unmessed with and the bore is very good.

I can't determine by the photos you've supplied, but mine is in pretty good shape and I paid $430 so if it looks worse than mine, I would say at most $300.

Thanks to all who posted their thoughts on the rifle I was asking about. I did get it bought for $250 which included two bandoleers (140 rounds) of ammo. When I brought it home and cleaned the bore it really is mirror bright with not much evidence of any kind of wear. The stock has the same stampings that the other 170 that is shown in this thread. All other parts including screws are the same number. Just has a mismatched bolt. The stock is fairly rough but cleaned up decently except for one 2" by 4" very dark stain on the left side of the stock just forward of the receiver. Who knows what that could be--I have an idea since this piece evidently saw a good amount of time on the battlefied--as referenced to Phild on a previous post. Thanks again Tomt

I think that you did very well. I saw a couple of band mis-matched 98ks bring over 1k at the SOS (one around $1200) and they were more common date/codes than yours. Personally I had generally rather have a bolt mismatch than a band, stock or trigger guard mismatch as the bolt has nothing to do with the bedding of the rifle and is pseudo intergal...about like a cleaning rod only easier to remove!

I see a lot of average common 98ks at well over $800 with mismatched bolts...I doubt that these are being bought as "shooters"
