Your friend uses an interesting weapon. It is a G29/40, which is a rifle that the Austrians (Steyr) made out of Polish Mauser parts (Wz29). Apparently, they were made for the Luftwaffe and/or the Kreigsmarine.

Originally, it basically looked like a typical K98. Here are some pics that I found:

With the exception if the last two, the pictures in this link:

        http://www.euroarms.net/CV/Germania/MAUS-G29-40.htm

        Are NOT of a 29/40 but of a G29o. The last 2 photos are of a 29/40.

As you can see in the photos the 29o is a completely different rifle than the 29/40. Also, fwiw, the rifle in the photos appears to have been reserialed at some point.

That euroarms website seems to get many things wrong. For a while they had a fanricated 33/40 listed.

Yeah, I see that now. I can't believe I didn't notice that before. I guess we had all better watch out for Euroarms, huh?

              Dear friends,
              I'm Fabrizio from Italy, Rome.
I'm very nice to have found this post on this forum: Some month ago I bought THAT rifle serial n°9629 from Euroarms, the biggest italian firearm importer and dialer.
As you can see I was told it to be a G29/40 but I realized that my rifle was a bit different...and looking in internet I understud that it was a G29o.
I'm writing to you because I've some difficult to find articles, photo and other materials about this fantastic rifle...can anybody help me?
Thanks and kind regards...and sorry for my english full of mistakes
              Fabrizio

Nice rifle, it's identical to mine, shown in the Euroarms site : http://www.euroarms.net/CV/Germania/MAUS-G29-40.htm
The first one (the 660 with norwegian second serial number) is just the rifle that I bought.
Have you got some material like articles, manuals and old photos to send me? (eventually i will write to you my email)
Thank a lot and kind regards
