    Removing grease from a gun

I recently bought this P-38 , can anyone give meany tips on how to remove grease from the gun to make it less like something which has been in long term storage.

This is what I do with every C&R firearm I buy. They are usually packed full of cosmolene and other kinds of preservative greases. All of these greases are petroleum bi-products. I take each firearm apart, remove all non metal pieces and set them aside.....this means handgrips, wood, etc. I then fill a small pan with kerosene and put the metal pieces in it to sit for about 10 minutes. I then come back with a soft nylon brush or paintbrush and brush each piece, making sure that the kerosene gets into the nooks and crannies. Then I swish the piece in the kerosene to remove all reside and grease, towel dry the piece and then set it aside to dry completely. When done with all the pieces, I lightly lube them with a thin layer of gun oil applies to a soft rag and rubbed across the metal surfaces. Reassemble and that's it. A beautiful clean C&R firearm. The kerosene has no effect on bluing or other finishes. Hope this helps.

One additional step I like to take before re-assembly after degreasing is to blow the dis-assembled parts out with an air hose if one is at hand.
