    Help with Holster Storage....

Just pulled out some holsters that I haven't seen in awhile. They were in a plastic storage container. Well, there is now a white spotty texture over the outside of the holsters, it wipes off easy enough, but it looks like someone has "sprinkled" them with talcum powder. Something is growing on them, just don't know what it is....anyone seen this before? I don't treat my leather with any products, they are all naturale so to speak, dry environment as well, almost no humidity up here in the winter. Chris....

it's got to be some kind of mold.

there are thousands of different kinds of spores so who knows which one it is.

I guess the plastic is trapping too much moisture?

I would keep holsters with some room, don't stack them maybe?

I always wondered how John James wraps his pistols in plastic and keeps the holster. I understand he does it to keep the holster's shape, and the plastic wrap is to keep the acid from the holster treatment etching the finish on the gun,

but wouldn't the plastic trap moisture on the gun? or is that only going to happen in a high humidity environment like here in Florida?

Maybe when guns are sprayed with oil, plastic prevents evaporation and prevents gun oil to soak into the holster.
Some time ago when I was storing my guns, I put lots of cosmolene on them and wrapped in multiple layers of foil. Nothing bad happened.

        Holster molding

Ive seen this with a few pieces of leather i have ..seems to only affect certain ones ..pouches & a couple of hosters..Ones that seem to have it have leather that always seems damp or somewhat oily..I heard its almost impossible to get rid of.. If you do hear of a formula to get rid of this stuf please post...

          Hi Chris

Has your storage box any air holes? maybe some air circulation might help

I am thinking that what is growing likes to be in a sealed environment where the temp might be higher and you trap humidity which is its ideal conditions for growth, by eliminating these conditions it should stop the stuff growing over time,
(white) vinegar might be a solution, but I would try a very small area first to see if any darkening occurs, this is just an idea as I use this on my boots to neutralize the salt they put down for snow? and I dont notice any colour change, of course this is just a suggestion, perhaps a dab on a cloth wouldnt hurt

I would try the air vents in the box though,

          Cheers

          John

            Mold Problem

I had a suggestion to freeze the holsters for awhile. I routinely freeze new wool items I get to kill Moth Larvae, but haven't tried it for mold. All my leather is out and getting some fresh air as I speak. Luckily the G43 pouches and MG42 pouches weren't infected (except for one). Chris...
