great idea getting the typed letter.

not to add money value, but to add historical value.

that's what I love about the stuff I collect, the historical value that is priceless.

Doesn't appear that there are any additional markings anywhere on the holster other than the stamped "P38", which is partially visible in frame #4. It's possible that there may be something under the portion covered by the piece of belt, but I can't remove it without doing some damage.

So how did you buy it from the Maplewood PD, and why would the guy give it to them?

Under todays circumstances I find it strange that they would sell it to you.

                        Nice P-38!! It's a keeper for sure!
And the letter adds a lot of history to it!

                        Congratulations!

Very nice early "cyq" P38!! Check it carefully to see if any of the smaller parts have proof markings or markings other than "eagle/88". A very desireable piece!!

The story is great too, but as I always say, "buy the gun, not the story", and you got a great gun!!

I'll try a few more photos later on.

I didn't buy the pistol from Maplewood PD. It was purchased from another collector in the mid 90's. I don't know any history of the piece prior to that.

I suspect along the line the "history" was given (documented) to this police chief, not the gun itself. It appears to be like a notary type document certifying the history of the gun.
