    Sniper Variations Book Information

I have always been interested in German snipers in WWII. Thinking about purchasing a copy of Sniper Variations Of The German K98K Rifle by Richard D. Law. Published by collector grade publications. Would like to know if the photos show K98Ks, scopes, etc. but also want to know if there are photos of German snipers in it as well. Is it worth the $50.00 price tag?

I have the volume 1 and expect the Sniper edition volume 2 any day. If volume 2 is as good as 1 I would say it is well worth it. $50 sounds like a good price. I paid $89.

That book and the one by Peter Senich 15 years or so before it are about the only game in town right now on German Sniper rifles. I think that anyone interested in German snipers and certainly those looking to aquire one should have those 2 books. The two part sniper training film that is around on VHS (and maybe CD?) is also very good original period material.

Law's book was met with a lot of anticipation when it came out and I think it is fair to say that it was generally received with disappointment. I think that Senich's book is much better overall although the photos in Law's book are better quality and there is a lot of information in each book that is not repeated in the other.

I was not aware of a volume 2, but I will buy it when it comes out. There is a lot of information that is now known on most of the sniper variations that is not in either of the 2 existing books. Both books also include fakes that slipped by as well.

        New sniper book

        Hi

I bourght the Sniper Variations of the German K98k Rifle by Richard D Law a few weeks ago, I have spendt many hours of reading and studying the pictures, even after reading from start to end. I am happy with the book, but haven't read the book by Peter Senich. There is a new book, ready by the end of this month, he authour is Robert Spielauer from Austria, look at the following link.

I have already ordered a copy and are looking forward to study it.
I have also ordered a pre 1945 Kahles scope, with repro high turret mounts from him, hardly can't wait to have it fitted to my K98(denazified receiver, othervised I'll never do it).

I would buy Senichs' book first! Much better, much more information, and much more accurate. Laws' book just doesn't show that many sniper rifles or variations. Nor does it discuss them all. Senichs' book is very complete, but the photos are not all that great of quality.

                  Matt,

Agreed. Law's book is problematic as a reference as it has as many fake rifles depicted as legit. If a collector or aspiring collector can't tell the difference it can bring some very dangerous results. Still, the translated period documents are invaluable.

Senich (IMO) is far better and more accurate. However, as you say the pics leave a great deal to be desired and limit learning.

I say buy em all but treat none like a bible.

50.00 dollars for a firearms book is cheap by compared to most collecting books I know about.

so it's probably worth it but I have not seen it.

I just recieved my copy of the book "Sniper Scopes and Mounts 1914-1945" this past Monday.
I found this book superb for it's photos and a worthwhile purchase for me.
However Senich's as well as Law's books should also be used as they have more of the written word in them.
Sniper Scopes and Mounts 1914-1945 by Spielauer has little written word but is a great photo reference.
